Selangor looks to KL as Greater Klang Valley partner to create economic powerhouse – MB

SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 – The Selangor administration is looking to include Kuala Lumpur as a partner within the economic conurbation of the Selangor Greater Klang Valley (SGKV), said Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

Speaking in the state assembly today, the Menteri Besar clarified that Selangor is not seeking to reclaim the nation’s capital as part of its territory but is instead engaging with the Federal government to position Kuala Lumpur as an economic partner under the SGKV framework.

He stated that under this framework, Selangor and the Federal governments could establish a special development zone similar to the Langkawi Development Authority, which oversees the development of Langkawi.

“When there is an enactment for the (Selangor) Greater Klang Valley, we will include (discussions with Kuala Lumpur) and further deliberate with Putrajaya to show that the Greater Klang Valley is not just a symbol of Selangor or Kuala Lumpur but a crucial economic, banking, and industrial hub for the country,” he told the state assembly today.

Amirudin was responding to an additional question from Gombak Setia state assemblyman Muhammad Hilman Idham on the state administration’s plan to resolve long-standing border issues with Kuala Lumpur.

The Menteri Besar also stated that Selangor has no intention of reclaiming Kuala Lumpur but is constantly engaged with Federal Territories Minister Zaliha Mustafa to resolve border issues.

He said both parties are expected to sign an agreement soon to finalise and respect each region’s respective boundaries.

SGKV is the conurbation between four major cities in Selangor, namely Petaling Jaya, Klang, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya.

Previously, state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the state administration aims to table the SGKV Development Council Enactment at the first meeting of this year’s Selangor State Legislative Assembly, with the council’s establishment expected to follow in 2026.
