Police on the hunt for Shah Alam cable thieves

SHAH ALAM, Feb 22 — Police are actively tracking a group of men believed to be involved in cable theft activities around Section 3 here.

This follows a viral 14-second video that showed several individuals using private vehicles, including a four-wheel drive, to steal cables at night.

Shah Alam District Police chief Ramsay Embol said the incident was caught on camera by a witness in his 30s, who is a local resident, at around 5am on Friday.

"The incident was noticed when the witness, who was asleep at the time, heard loud noises outside his house. He got up and saw a group of unidentified men cutting the cables.

"The witness attempted to follow the suspects, but was warned off. The suspects then attempted to chase the witness before fleeing,” he said in a statement today.

Ramsay said the group is believed to be skilled in cable theft, including digging up cable ducts and pulling them out before cutting them in secluded locations, likely to get hold of the copper.

"Efforts to track and arrest the suspects are actively ongoing. The total losses are still under investigation," he said.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a maximum imprisonment of seven year and fine.

Those with information can contact Inspector Muhammad Zamri Abdul Rahman at 0111-6652402.

The police also urged the public immediately report any suspicious individual or cable theft activity through the 999 emergency line.
