SHAH ALAM, Jan 29 — Pig farms in and around Tanjung Sepat will be closed by this year, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
He said the state government is studying the state’s pork demand and supply to minimise disruption, following a directive from Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.
“His Royal Highness has asked that we conduct a study to determine the needs, and this is underway. As for the (pig farm) closures, we will try to implement it as soon as possible, within this year.
“The ongoing study includes identifying alternative sources once the closures are done, including imports from abroad.
“When importing, prices may increase, but we do not want the hike to be excessive,” he said after the launch of Shah Alam’s second Voluntary Local Review of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals here today.
Amirudin said about 70 per cent of Selangor’s pork supply is already being sourced from other states and countries.
On Monday, the menteri besar announced the postponement of a central pig farm project in Bukit Tagar so the state government can explore alternatives.
Amirudin said the decision was made during last week’s Selangor State Executive Council meeting, adding that state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim has been told to find alternative sites for the project.
