Selangor halts pig farming licences, imports to fill demand — MB

SHAH ALAM, Feb 12 — The Selangor government has announced it will halt the issuance of pig farming licences in the state, in line with a recent decree by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.

In a statement today, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said existing pig farms will be closed gradually but at an accelerated pace, in collaboration with the Selangor State Veterinary Department.

“Since January, the Selangor government has stopped issuing pig farming licences and has focused on clearing existing farm sites in Tanjong Sepat, in accordance with His Royal Highness’s decree issued last month.

“The state executive council upholds with the highest respect the latest decree, which expresses His Royal Highness’s non-consent for pig farming in any district of the state,” the statement read.

Amirudin added that the council had also agreed that all local pork demand will now be fully met through imports.

“At present, 70 per cent of the non-Muslim community’s pork consumption is sourced from imports from other states.

“This decision safeguards community sensitivities regarding the environmental impact of pig farms, including water drainage and odour pollution.

“Any issuance or approval of import licences will be referred to the federal government, in line with its authority over licensing matters,” he said.

Amirudin also urged the public to avoid polemics over the pig farming issue, warning that prolonging the debate could disrupt harmony and create suspicion among Selangor’s multi-racial and multi-religious communities.

On Tuesday, the Selangor Ruler voiced his opposition to pig farming in the state, citing concerns over pollution and environmental impact.

His Royal Highness also supported Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s statement yesterday that pig farming should not proceed in areas where it faces local opposition or could spark controversy.

Sultan Sharafuddin called for an end to the pig farming debate in Selangor, highlighting the concerns it raises among various parties.
