SHAH ALAM, Jan 16 — A total of 2,712 summonses were issued in Selangor last year against lorry drivers who violated the Restricted Route Order for heavy vehicles on highways during peak hours.

Selangor Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Azrin Borhan said the excuse most frequently given by offending drivers when stopped by enforcement officers was that they were “rushing to complete trips”.

He explained that restrictions on heavy vehicle movement are enforced from 6.30 am to 9.30 am and 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm to ease congestion during peak commuting hours.

“Despite prior warnings and early notifications, there are still drivers who remain stubborn and refuse to comply with the order,” he said during a media briefing at the Ops Khas Restricted Route for Heavy Vehicles at the ELITE Highway Mufors Gallery here yesterday, as reported by Berita Harian.

During the special operation, 57 lorry drivers were issued summonses for breaching the movement restriction.

Azrin said the ELITE Highway recorded the highest number of violations last year with 1,346 summonses, followed by the Federal Highway (579), Jalan Templer (366) and Sungai Buaya (420).

He added that drivers who breach the order face fines starting from RM300, which can go up to RM2,000 for repeated offences.

“Enforcement is carried out under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, involving JPJ officers, the Royal Malaysia Police and traffic wardens,” he said.

Among the main routes affected by the Restricted Route Order are the ELITE Highway, New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE), Jalan Kepong to Jalan Kuching, and Jalan Sungai Buaya.

Azrin also urged drivers, employers and heavy vehicle operators to be more alert and plan their journeys responsibly to ensure the safety and comfort of all road users.
