KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — Bernama TV yesterday lodged a police report over the circulation in social media of an auto-translated piece of news on a work-from-home directive for people in conditional movement control order (CMCO) red zones that had been wrongly attributed to the television channel.
The English text of the original piece of news tweeted in Malay by Bernama TV was an incorrect version that was obtained by turning on Facebook’s automatic translation setting.
The incorrect translation was then screenshot and circulated in social media.
Bernama TV reiterated that the auto-translated piece of news did not come from the television channel and that it had immediately circulated on social media a message declaring that piece of news as fake because it carried the Bernama logo.
Bernama TV said it views the circulation of the auto-translated piece of news as an attempt to discredit the television channel as well as the parent organisation Bernama, the Malaysian National News Agency, especially at a time when Bernama’s services are most needed to disseminate accurate information to the public on the Covid-19 situation and related matters in the country.
