Malaysia's signing of 14 MoUs with China a strategic move, says expert

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 — The move between Malaysia and China to establish cooperation in various fields through the signing of 14 memorandums of understanding (MoU) has been described as comprehensive and strategic.

One Belt One Road Association Malaysia president Datuk Iskandar Sarudin said the MoUs will benefit the development of the country’s economy and improve research and education.

For the past decade, Malaysia and China have been very concerned about each other's growth and advancements and the signing of these 14 MoUs is a step toward addressing the gaps in this relationship, Iskandar said during his appearace as a guest on Bernama TV’s Ruang Bicara programme tonight.

Iskandar said he hopes that Malaysia will start working with China to grow its halal industry, which is Malaysia’s trademark and strength.

“The potential of the halal industry is immense ... there may be some sensitivities from a religious standpoint regarding this topic, but it should be viewed from the perspective of trade, employment and the economy to ensure it benefits both countries,” he said.

The 14 MoUs include projects involving the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry to strengthen investments in the digital economy and promote cooperation in green development.

Others, including the Home Ministry and the Communications Ministry, will work with China to fight transnational crime and join efforts with China Media Group to solidify the media sector, respectively.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang made an official visit to Malaysia from Tuesday to Thursday. It was his inaugural visit since assuming office in March 2023.

Li's visit also coincides with the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations following the signing of the Joint Communiqué between second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and then Chinese Premier Chou En Lai on May 31, 1974.
