SHAH ALAM, March 17 — A total of 44 manufacturing companies ceased operations in Selangor from 2020 until 2021, said state executive councillor for trade and investment Dato’ Teng Chang Khim.

He said the companies’ shutdown caused 835 local and 119 foreign workers to lose their jobs.

“However, the closure did not directly affect the state government’s financial situation as the companies only paid a minimal sum of quit rent and assessment tax,” Teng said during the Question-and-Answer session of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly earlier today.

Teng was responding to a query from Sungai Ramai state assemblyman Mazwan Johar on the Covid-19 pandemic’s economic impact.

He added that the state government has also taken the initiative to help workers terminated during the pandemic land new jobs by organising the ‘Jelajah Selangor Bekerja 2021’ career fair.

“Last year, the sixth iteration of the career fair was held in different locations. This programme is a platform for job seekers looking for employment, which subsequently helps to reduce the unemployment rate in the state,” he said.
