SHAH ALAM, Feb 25 — The post-flood clean-up operations in Taman Sri Muda at Section 25 here, which was scheduled to be complete end of March, is extended due to several constraints.
KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) managing director Ramli Mohd Tahir said the workers should have begun cleaning the drainages and ditches in the second phase. However, a high volume of bulk waste in residential areas still needs to be cleared.
“Bulk waste like furniture should have been collected in the first phase. But some of the residents are still throwing out these items, which had shifted our focus, causing a delay in our plans.
“Some of the house owners also had modified the drains and waterway. Therefore, it requires us more time to complete the clean-up process,” he said.
Ramli also urged the residents to cooperate by renting out the Roll-On-Roll-Off (RoRo) bins from local councils to clear out their bulk waste.
“This week, we will be organising another round of ‘gotong-royong’ (community clean-up programme) and we will also provide RoRo bins. Those who still have bulk waste to throw out are urged not to miss this opportunity,” he said.
Since December 20 last year, the state-owned waste management company has mobilised its workforce for the clean-up process at the flood-stricken areas in stages.
Throughout the first phase of the clean-up process, which was completed on January 7, a total of 78,000 tonnes of solid waste were collected in collaboration with local councils and other agencies.
The second phase, which commenced on January 8, was focused on disinfection operation and cleaning clogged ditches using the effective microbiology (EM) technology.
