KDEBWM: Second phase of post-flood clean-up to complete in May

SHAH ALAM, Jan 30 — The second phase of the post-flood clean-up operations is expected to conclude in May, says the KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM).

Its managing director Ramli Mohd Tahir said the company had initially scheduled the operations to complete by March.

However, they are faced with several challenges, including weather factors.

“Up until now, we are still collecting bulk waste from residential areas, when we should have begun focusing on drainage works.

“If we do not collect the waste, it would cause clogged drainages. Due to uncertain weather conditions, uncollected bulk waste could lead to flash floods.

“Therefore, we expect the cleaning process will take around three to five months to complete,” he told SelangorKini today.

Ramli explained further that the narrow and deep structure of the drainages had caused several drawbacks to the maintenance works.

“There are also some drainages that are covered, which had delayed the spraying and digging works as we need to break the cover before we could proceed in cleaning the area,” he added.

KDEBWM is a wholly-owned state government’s subsidiary entrusted to manage the domestic waste collection in Selangor.

The company has been actively involved in the cleaning works at flood-stricken areas in stages since December 20, 2021.

As of January 7, a total of 78,000-tonne metrics of waste have been collected in collaboration with local councils and other agencies.
