SHAH ALAM, Feb 9 — The state government has set a six-month period, or until the third quarter of this year, for all pig farmers in Tanjung Sepat, Kuala Langat, to vacate their respective farms after deciding that no licence renewals will be granted.
State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato' Izham Hashim said the decision was made due to the risk of the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) and ongoing environmental pollution in the area.
“The state government’s decision is not to renew the licences, and farmers are required to vacate their farms. A period of six months, or until the third quarter of this year, has been given for full clearance.
“If during this period there are livestock confirmed to be ASF-positive, disposal action will be carried out immediately. Only livestock confirmed to be negative will be allowed to be transported out in stages to slaughterhouses,” he said.
Izham was speaking to the media after officiating the handover ceremony for the new Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) vehicles and machinery, as well as the Acceptance Letter for the Long-Term Road Maintenance Contract 2026-2030, at the Selangor JKR Mini Stadium today.
He added that the number of pig farms in the affected area has now decreased compared to 30 farms previously, and farmers have been reminded not to begin new breeding cycles during the clearance period.
The state government continues to prioritise farmers’ welfare by holding meetings with investors in modern technology to explore cleaner, more environmentally friendly closed-system farming methods.
“I have arranged meetings between farmers and modern technology investors. If this industry is to continue, they must shift to a cleaner and more controlled closed farming system, such as that being developed in Sungai Siput, Perak.
“This method must also meet certain criteria, including locations far from residential areas and water sources,” Izham said.
Commenting on the proposal to relocate farms to Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor, he said the state government has yet to finalise a location and that further studies are underway to identify the most suitable area.
“I previously mentioned Bukit Tagar because there are farms owned by government-linked companies located far from residential areas, but it is only one of the options. Several other alternatives are also being considered,” Izham said.
