Nearly RM250m spent to maintain federal roads in Selangor last year

SHAH ALAM, Feb 4 — Putrajaya has allocated nearly RM250 million to maintain federal roads in Selangor last year, as part of ongoing nationwide efforts to ensure road safety and maintain infrastructure.

According to Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, the Public Works Department (JKR) is responsible for maintaining 18,705.93km of federal roads across Malaysia.

They include 14,973.93km in Peninsular Malaysia, 1,536.95km in Sabah, 2,055.92km in Sarawak, and 139.13km in Labuan.

Ahmad said that in 2024, RM2.48 billion was allocated for routine and periodic road maintenance, including bridges and lighting.

For 2025, the allocation increased to RM2.96 billion, with RM247.15 million for Selangor alone.

“Our maintenance works are divided into three categories, namely, routine preventive maintenance, periodic corrective maintenance, and emergency repairs in case of floods or other incidents.

“Roads must be patched promptly depending on the severity of damage,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

On the issue of potholes along federal routes, Ahmad said maintenance standards follow preventive and corrective measures, with damaged roads patched within 24 hours.
