Selangor holds early CNY party on Feb 7 to include all communities

SUBANG JAYA, Jan 26 — The Selangor government will hold its Chinese New Year party a week before the festival as an inclusive move so all communities can join in the celebration, said state executive councillor for investment, trade, and mobility Ng Sze Han.

He said the event is scheduled for February 7 at Taman Rekreasi Wawasan, Puchong from 5pm to 10pm, and is set to draw around 10,000 attendees of all races.

“Although Chinese New Year falls on February 17, the state government has taken a proactive step to hold the celebration earlier. This decision was made to avoid an overlap with the start of Ramadan, which is expected to coincide with the festive season.

“It ensures the smooth running of the community feast and respects Muslims who will be fasting, while allowing people of all races and the state leadership to celebrate together,” he said during a press conference at the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) today.

Also present was Invest Selangor Bhd chief executive officer Dato’ Hasan Azhari Idris.

Ng, who is Kinrara assemblyman, said that this year, the traditional yee sang toss will be replaced with a rice-mixing event led by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and other senior government officials.

“The mixing rice concept was chosen as a symbol of community participation through the giving and sharing of rice, representing the sharing of prosperity, blessings, and the strengthening of unity among people of all races,” he said.

The ceremony, organised by the Selangor government in collaboration with Invest Selangor and MBSJ, aims to bring the festivities closer to the community.

Ng said visitors can enjoy a variety of performances throughout the evening, including cultural dances, live music, street and lion dances, puppet shows, and a light projection show.

The celebration will include the distribution of 1,500 money packets (for children under 12), mandarins, and 5,000 small rice packets as souvenirs.

Meals will be served in two sessions, for 3,000 people at 5.45pm and 2,000 people at 8.30pm.

Meanwhile, to avoid traffic congestion, Ng encouraged visitors to use e-hailing or public transport like Smart Selangor buses and Demand-Responsive Transit (DRT) vans, whose schedules are available on the Rapid On Demand app.

“In the Year of the Horse, we hope Selangor continues to drive inclusive growth for everyone,” Ng added.
