SHAH ALAM, Nov 25 — The Selangor government will offer incentives to industry players who support the state’s environmental sustainability agenda through the Selangor Recycling Programme (SELKitar), as part of efforts to encourage wider participation.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the incentives, which may be provided by the state administration or local authorities, will help increase the state’s recycling rate in line with targets outlined in the First Selangor Plan (RS-1).

“I welcome the efforts of these strategic partners. We will look into potential proposals or initiatives that can be offered to them, as they are using their own resources.

“Perhaps this can be balanced with certain perks or incentives to encourage more parties to become involved, whether directly or indirectly, in the SELKitar programme,” he said after launching the state-level SELKitar Programme and officiating the symbolic handover of operation trucks to participating local councils at the Selangor State Secretariat Building today.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari speaking at the launch of the Selangor Recycling Programme (SELKitar) and the handover of SELKitar operation trucks at the Selangor State Secretariat Building, Shah Alam, on November 25, 2025.

The programme, under the purview of KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEWM), began its pilot phase in several local councils in April and has since secured collaborations with Nestlé Malaysia and Media Selangor Sdn Bhd, with Klang WasteCare now also involved.

Amirudin stated that as of October 1, SELKitar operations have been implemented across all local councils except Sabak Bernam, supported by 21 dedicated trucks for collecting recyclable materials.

“A total of 412,812 houses or premises are currently participating in this programme. InshaAllah (God willing), next year we will intensify efforts on e-waste collection involving all districts.

“SELKitar has also increased the recycling rate from 12 per cent to 16 per cent, surpassing the RS-1 target. This is still an early effort, and we will explore further ways to reach a 30 per cent or even 50 per cent household recycling rate,” he said.

SELKitar was launched in April as a long-term initiative to advance circular economy practices through recycling activities, focusing on waste segregation at source and shared responsibility among stakeholders.
