KUALA LANGAT, Jan 30 — The implementation of the Selangor Kitar Semula (SELKitar) program not only focuses on solid waste management, but also plays a role in educating school and higher education institution (IPT) students on the importance of environmental conservation through a practical approach.
The headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Olak Lempit, Maswadi Mohd Milatusamsi, said his school has taken the initiative to produce compost from student food waste for use in agricultural activities within the school grounds.
“Food waste from approximately 1,400 students is collected and processed into compost for use in school farming activities.
“This initiative not only helps reduce food waste, but also teaches students to save costs, as they do not need to purchase soil for gardening activities at school,” he told Media Selangor.
Earlier, a total of 30 schools and IPTs in Kuala Langat participating in SELKitar received a set of recycling bins and a RM300 cash incentive presented by Managing Director of KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM), Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir.
According to Maswadi, the SELKitar program also helps instill early awareness among students about the importance of caring for the environment and understanding the negative consequences if waste is not properly managed.
Meanwhile, lecturer at Kolej Vokasional Sultan Abdul Samad, Sim Li Wah, said the college implemented SELKitar by organizing a fashion competition using discarded materials widely available in the surroundings.
She explained that students are encouraged to collect various used materials to create creative outfits as part of the competition.
“This programme raises awareness about the value of waste, while also providing students with opportunities to generate income from their creativity using used materials,” said the fashion design lecturer.
