Selangor centres human capital development for nuclear sector

SHAH ALAM, Nov 18 — The state government is centring human capital development over the next five years to prepare for its nuclear energy sector growth, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said officers and students who are interested will be sent to study nuclear management at Harbin University and Tsinghua University in China.

“At the initial stage, we will focus on building human capital capacity. We will send officers or students who are interested specifically in nuclear energy generation.

“The five years I’m aiming for is to start capacity building, action plans and strategies that will be comprehensively formulated,” he told a press conference after an MOU signing ceremony between Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WBS) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Building here today.

Amirudin said Malaysia’s nuclear energy field is new, and dependence on imports could hike costs in the future.

“We must be ready for the future and not just depend on fossil fuels like gas and coal, which are less sustainable than nuclear,” he added.

Yesterday, he told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly that he expects it to take five years to establish nuclear energy as a clean power source.

When tabling the 2026 Selangor Budget, Amirudin announced the setup of the Joint Working Committee on Nuclear Energy, with a RM1 million fund, to assess nuclear power efficiency based on developments in the sector.
