Selangor partners with BMW to train next-gen automotive workforce

SHAH ALAM, Nov 12 — The Selangor Technical Development Centre (STDC) has inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with BMW Group Malaysia to produce world-class local skilled talent, in line with the needs of the future automotive industry.

Implemented under the BMW Next Generation Technician (BMW NextGT) programme, STDC said the initiative aims to strengthen the local technical and vocational education and training (TVET) ecosystem.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the programme reflects the state’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of skilled Malaysians ready to lead the transition towards sustainable mobility and future electrification.

“It also strengthens technical and vocational excellence while empowering youth with world-class skills,” he said in a statement issued by STDC following the MOU signing ceremony yesterday, held in conjunction with the Selangor Techsphere Summit 2025 in Kuala Lumpur.

Amirudin, who witnessed the ceremony alongside Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, said he is honoured by BMW Group Malaysia’s confidence in the Selangor government.

Through this partnership, STDC’s automotive instructors will undergo intensive training under the BMW Technician Qualification Framework, which covers the latest automotive technologies, professional maintenance practices, and BMW’s global standards.

Upon completion, they will transfer their expertise to STDC trainees through the implementation of the BMW NextGT Programme, with graduates to receive the BMW Professional Certificate.

STDC chief executive officer Dr Harizal Hamid said the collaboration with BMW Group Malaysia opens up vast opportunities for the development of automotive skilled talent in Selangor.

“Through the BMW NextGT Programme, STDC trainees will receive world-class training and a professional certificate recognised by the global industry, in line with the state’s aspiration to become a hub for future automotive technology,” Harizal said.

Apart from the automotive sector, STDC said it is also spearheading the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the state through the Selangor Teraju AI programme, implemented in collaboration with state government agencies to enhance administrative efficiency and accelerate service delivery to the people.

STDC has also established a strategic partnership with Google Cloud Asia Pacific to train instructors and students in AI model development, data analytics, and smart system integration using the Google AI and Cloud Services platform.

“The combined expertise of BMW Group Malaysia, the technological capabilities of Google Cloud Asia Pacific, and the Selangor government’s commitment through STDC mark the beginning of a new era in the state’s technical and digital education development.

“These efforts are expected to produce a knowledgeable, innovative, and competitive future workforce, strengthening Selangor’s position as a regional hub for technical education and digital innovation,” STDC said.
