State eyes emerging sectors to avoid stagnation — MB

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — The Selangor government is planning initiatives to protect the state against economic stagnation, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said these efforts will focus on emerging sectors and practical reforms, adding that the state is pursuing strategic interventions such as enhancing the life sciences industry, research and development (R&D), and the care economy to prepare for an ageing society.

“We cannot wait until we reach economic stagnation before we act,” he said in his closing remarks at the 2026 Selangor State Budget engagement session at the Sime Darby Convention Centre here today. “We must identify new areas to grow, whether in life sciences, R&D, or the care economy.”

Amirudin said Selangor is exploring opportunities in the care economy, focusing on training and development of local talent to serve as experts in the sector, rather than solely to fulfil foreign demand.

He added that the state will expand public health initiatives, with a focus on mental health, by increasing funding, improving facilities, and implementing community-based interventions.

He also stressed the importance of translating blueprints into concrete, actionable plans with clear timelines and measurable outcomes, adding: “We must set what we want to achieve in the next six to eight years, and ensure reforms in governance, education, rural development, and investment facilitation are implemented efficiently.”

He said Selangor must remain resilient in a multipolar and uncertain world, and to seek opportunities even amid crises.

“Every crisis presents a point of sacrifice and a test of leadership. Leaders must be bold, sometimes make painful decisions, and acknowledge mistakes when they need to,” Amirudin said.
