SHAH ALAM, Sept 4 — Desilting works are being carried out at five on-site detention (OSD) ponds in Setia Alam to restore their function in regulating stormwater runoff.
Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) councillor Simon Siow said the maintenance was necessary to remove accumulated debris that had hindered water flow and reduced the ponds’ effectiveness.
“In total, there are five OSD ponds. Work on one pond, located at Central Park in Persiaran Setia Indah, has been completed,” he said as reported by The Star.
According to Siow, excavation and removal of mud at all five ponds costs RM5.7 million, fully covered by developer SP Setia.
Ongoing works are taking place at sites including Urban Park@Setia Taipan on Jalan Setia Gemilang U13/BG, Western Park at Persiaran Setia Impian, near Wisma SP Setia at Persiaran Setia Dagang, and Jalan Setia Gemilang U13/47.
Siow said the OSD pond at Urban Park@Setia Taipan is being deepened to 2.5 metres to better retain surface runoff before gradually discharging it into Sungai Kapar Kecil in Klang.
“MBSA wants the ponds to effectively manage sudden deluge due to continuous rain. Desilting ensures the ponds can effectively store excess water and release it slowly.”
He said this helps prevent downstream infrastructure and water bodies from being overloaded.
Work at the remaining ponds is expected to be completed by mid-October.
