KLANG, Aug 24 — The issue of flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down should not be politicised and must be resolved in accordance with the law, says state executive councillor for unity Datuk Rizam Ismail.

He warned that politicising the matter would only create division and undermine national harmony.

“So far, no official reports have been lodged regarding upside-down flags (in Selangor). This shows that the people of Selangor are careful with how they display the flag.

“Nevertheless, the issue must be handled legally and not politicised, as that could lead to disunity. For now, the situation remains under control,” he said after officiating the state-level Unity Week celebration, which was also attended by Deput National Unity Minister Saraswathy Kandasami.

Recently, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the police received 38 reports relating to the flying of the Jalur Gemilang upside down, of which 17 were in Penang.

Meanwhile, Rizam announced that a total of 373 Village Development and Security Committees (JPKK) chairpersons and traditional village heads will be appointed as unity agents.

He said the appointees from the nine districts will undergo community mediator certification training next year.

“These individuals will serve as certified unity agents, fostering patriotism while being able to resolve minor issues without escalating them to higher legal authorities.

“This spirit of patriotism must be cultivated not only among children but across all age groups. This is to prevent undesirable incidents, including the incorrect display of the national flag,” he said.
