Over 250 cases of price tag violations detected during festive seasons last year

KLANG, Feb 13 — The Selangor Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) detected 257 cases involving traders who failed to use special pink price tags during the implementation of the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) last year.

State executive councillor for rural development, unity, and consumers Datuk Rizam Ismail said this was the most common offence recorded out of 265 total enforcement actions.

The remaining cases involved selling above the maximum price and failing to display price tags entirely.

"The SHMMP, which covers Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali, and Christmas, involved inspection of 2,230 premises, resulting in seizures totalling RM4,370 and compounds amounting to RM30,900.

“Some traders took advantage by not displaying the special price tags, a failure that can lead to fraud," he said after inspecting the Chinese New Year SHMMP implementation today.

Rizam added that failing to use the special price tag carries a maximum fine of RM10,000 or a compound of up to RM5,000 for individual traders, while companies face a maximum fine of RM20,000.

Commenting on the current Chinese New Year SHMMP in Selangor, he reported that business premises are cooperating well and maintaining a high level of compliance.

"Most items are also being sold at prices lower than the set maximum price," he said.

In other developments, the state government will monitor pork prices following the Selangor State Executive Council's decision to import the meat specifically for the local non-Muslim community's needs.

Monitoring will be conducted in collaboration with KPDN, as pork is among the controlled items for Chinese New Year celebrations annually.

"What is most important is that pork prices in Selangor are currently under control and are being monitored. Based on the controlled rates, the farm price for pork is RM18 per kg, while retail prices range between RM30 and RM41," Rizam said.
