KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Any offence related to the improper installation or display of the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) that could cause confusion, misunderstanding, or public concern can lead to legal action.

The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) said that all parties are responsible for respecting the Malaysian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty and for complying with the laws and guidelines in effect regarding its use.

"The AGC views seriously any act of displaying, hoisting, or installing the Malaysian flag in a disorderly or improper manner," it said in a statement today.

The AGC noted among the reported incidents of the Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down were at a shop in Kepala Batas, Penang, and at a school in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan. Other incidents included the display of an incomplete Malaysian flag in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) results report book and on the official social media accounts of several local newspapers.

Meanwhile, it also reminded the public not to take matters into their own hands against anyone suspected of being involved in such acts.

"This includes raiding the premises of the suspected parties, sharing personal information or making reckless accusations on social media, provoking or threatening the individuals or organisations involved, and taking over the role of authorities, such as ordering the flag to be taken down or seizing the materials involved without legal authority.

"All complaints or related information should be channelled to the authorities for appropriate action in accordance with the principle of the rule of law," the AGC said.
