KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 — There is no reason for Malaysians not to know how to properly display the Jalur Gemilang after decades of independence.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this when addressing the Dewan Negara today, following dozens of reported cases of the national flag being flown upside down this year alone.

"As Merdeka approaches, it is important to honour and uphold the Jalur Gemilang," he said when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the upper House here today.

"By now, we should have the maturity to know the proper way to display the flag so that it does not continue to spark endless controversy.

"As such, we urge the public to fly the Jalur Gemilang, and to ensure it is displayed in the correct position."

Anwar said this is vital as Jalur Gemilang should be viewed as a symbol of the nation’s pride and dignity.

Recently, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the police received 38 reports relating to the flying of the Jalur Gemilang upside down, of which 17 were in Penang.

In a statement on August 15, the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) said any offence related to the improper installation or display of the Jalur Gemilang that could cause confusion, misunderstanding, or public concern can lead to legal action.

It reminded that all parties are responsible for respecting the Malaysian flag as a symbol of national sovereignty.

Yesterday, state executive councillor for unity Datuk Rizam Ismail said the issue of flying the flag upside down should not be politicised and must be resolved in accordance with the law.

He warned that politicising the matter would only create division and undermine national harmony.
