Sg Korok tragedy: Govt mulls guardrails along riverbank — DPM

JERLUN, July 8 — The government will look into a proposal to install guardrails and street lights along Jalan Sungai Korok in Jitra, where a recent tragedy claimed the lives of six family members, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said he had been briefed by the Public Works Department (JKR) on infrastructure upgrades for the road, which connects Jitra to Jerlun.

“We will discuss with JKR the installation of guardrails along the riverbank, and I will make efforts to have street lights installed in that area as well as other poorly lit locations.

“Incidentally, I am also the chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion, and I will inform the relevant minister so immediate action can be taken,” Zahid said.

He was speaking to the press after visiting the home of the grandmother of Putri Qisya Nur Izzat, 12, in Kampung Bohor Karang today.

Putri is the eldest daughter of Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, and Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, who perished along with their four children when their car plunged into Sungai Korok early on Saturday (July 5).

Zahid added that Putri will be adopted by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) to support her education all the way to university level.

He had also advised Putri Qisya to stay strong in the face of this tragic loss and to grow up to be a righteous woman.

“InsyaAllah, MRSM (Mara Junior Science College) is ready to accept her next year, and her grandmother has agreed. All necessary assistance will be provided, and we will do our best to secure her future,” Zahid said.
