Exco: Screening process for estate workers’ housing will be fair and transparent

SHAH ALAM, Dec 22 — The state’s Human Resources and Poverty Eradication Committee is not involved in the implementation of the Program Residensi Rakyat’s (PRR) Harmoni Madani project in Bestari Jaya in Kuala Selangor.

Its executive councillor, V. Papparaidu, said the project — which consists of five housing estates — comes under the jurisdiction of the Selangor Housing and Property Board (LPHS) and housing developer BerjayaCity Sdn Bhd (BerjayaCity).

Papparaidu said BerjayaCity has stipulated that future homeowners of the project must be able to show employment records of over 10 years (from 2015).

“On February 13, I chaired a meeting for the estate workers involved with members of the Housing and Local Government Ministry, representatives of Permatang, and BerjayaCity.

“During our discussions, it was discovered that the number of those employed as estate workers, according to a worker representative, was 245, while BerjayaCity came up with only 69 names,” said Papparaidu in a statement.

Therefore, the remaining 176 names will go through another round of screening by BerjayaCity, LPHS and representatives from the Selangor government, in order to be chosen.

Papparaidu also addressed the former estate workers of Ladang Sungai Balata in Kuala Kubu Baharu, whose housing project has been stalled for 25 years.

“I want to state here that the stalled project is due to political meddling by certain individuals and political parties that has complicated matters,” he said.

“I urge the former estate workers to not be fooled by the sweet promises of these individuals that will come to nothing.”

The executive councillor also promised to handle the matter with fairness and transparency for all involved.

In May, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming announced a housing project for 245 settlers for five estates around Bestari Jaya, to end their 26 years of waiting for housing.

According to Nga, the project will span 8.09 hectares involving the estate workers of Ladang Mary, Ladang Nigel Garder, Ladang Bukit Tagar, Ladang Sungai Tinggi and Ladang Minyak.
