KUALA SELANGOR, Aug 30 — A pair of siblings have taken the initiative to build two national landmarks by using over 1,000 used beverage bottles.
Ahmad Afif Mohd Zailani, 16, and Ahmad Afiq Mohd Zailani, 15, constructed replicas of the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) and the Kuala Lumpur Tower at their residence in Kampung Sungai Kajang Baru.
Ahmad Afif said the idea arose when they wanted to participate in the TikTok video competition Jom Kitar Semula, organised by SMK Seri Desa in Tanjung Karang.
"The prize offered was quite generous, a smartwatch. It motivated both of us to win, even though we submitted separate entries.
"We were also fortunate to receive support and encouragement from our parents and family members. Our parents were accommodating from start to finish," he said during a recent interview.
Their father, Mohd Zailani Juni, 40, said the boys began collecting used beverage bottles from July 27 onwards, making it a habit to carry plastic bags wherever they went, including to the office.
The idea to build replicas of KLCC and the KL Tower, each standing six feet tall, was to make it unique and to ignite a sense of patriotism in conjunction with the 66th National Day.
"We also faced some challenges, especially in collecting these used beverage bottles. Not all brands could be used due to their different sizes.
"My wife (Norazizah Imam Muhairi, 40) and myself were determined to see it through. I suggested they build something big and challenging, suitable for their age," he said.
Mohd Zailani added the family was surprised when their TikTok video entry went viral and attracted the interest of many to see both replicas up close.
It has also resulted in an invitation from the Selangor Information Department to participate in the Anugerah Semarak Gemilang 2023 competition, which offers a cash prize of RM3,000.
