SHAH ALAM, July 16 — The prompt action by the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) following a fire occurrence in the industrial area of Bandar Bukit Beruntung, Rawang, prevented the contamination of the water sources.
Following an investigation, Luas stated that the incident, which happened yesterday at 4pm close to Sungai Guntong, resulted in fire water flowing into the monsoon drain.
However, the agency said it had swiftly increased its preventative efforts and put 12 bags of activated carbon down the drain to absorb the odour detected, and as of 7am today, the water treatment plant's pollution reading was at zero TON (threshold odour number).
“There is no potential disruption to the operation of the Rantau Panjang SSP1, SSP2 and SSP3 WTPs.
“The approximate distance from the event site to the Rantau Panjang inlet is 17.76 kilometres, and it would take 12 hours for the pollutants to travel there.
“Follow-up mitigating actions and close supervision in Sungai Sembah and Sg Selangor are also implemented by Luas,” the agency said on Facebook today.
Luas added that it will continue to closely monitor and patrol the area around the fire event location until the operation at the site is fully completed by the relevant agencies to ensure that Selangor's water resources are always protected.
