HULU LANGAT, June 23 — The Semenyih water treatment plant operation was suspended at 10.15am today due to odour pollution that was detected in Sungai Semenyih.

However, state executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said there were no water supply disruptions because the suspension was temporary.

“The pollution did not enter the inlet and the suspension was not more than four hours. It did not affect the water supply to consumers.

“Initial investigations found that the pollution was caused by a palm oil processing factory,” he said to the media after visiting the plant which is believed to be the cause of the odour pollution in Sungai Semenyih, here today.

Hee added that the authorities have taken pollution samples from the factory’s sump area and its premise to be sent to the Chemistry Department for further investigation.

“The factory has been operating for over 30 years and it is located in a heavy industrial area. According to records, this is not the first offence by the factory.

“The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) and other parties involved will lodge a police report and investigations would be made under the Luas Enactment 1999,” he said.
