SHAH ALAM, Nov 26 — The state government has allocated RM5.03 million in the 2022 Selangor Budget for the development and empowerment of women.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the allocation would be set aside for state-owned company Wanita Berdaya Selangor Sdn Bhd.

“The allocation will be used to implement programmes and activities for women, including mobilising Pusat Wanita Berdaya (PWB) in all 56 state constituencies as well as the Women’s Leadership Academy,” he said while tabling the 2022 Selangor Budget at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here, today.

He said the budget also allocated RM200,000 for PWB’s Lifelong Learning Programme, which will provide scholarships to selected women for continuing their studies at the diploma, bachelor’s and master’s levels in various fields in collaboration with Open University Malaysia (OUM).

Amirudin also announced a RM200,000 allocation to further improve the state’s domestic violence hotline SELamat.

He said the allocation will be used to strengthen cooperative ties with women’s shelters and assist them in protecting abused individuals.

He said SELamat is important as statistics show that domestic violence cases in the country increased by 8 per cent in 2020 from 2019, especially after the movement control order (MCO) was implemented.

“We can see as a result of the pandemic in our country, an increase in the number of cases related to domestic violence, especially in the state of Selangor.

“Therefore, under the Selangor Stimulus Package 2.0, the state government has established SELamat,” he said.
