States should follow Selangor’s example on water reclamation project, minister says

SHAH ALAM, March 17 — Other states should emulate Selangor's efforts to build water reclamation plants, especially for the industrial sector, says the Environment and Water Minister.

Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said treated wastewater would be an alternative source to reduce dependence on rivers, especially during the dry season.

“The collaboration between Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) and Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) opens a new chapter for all of us and this is just the beginning.

"I am confident that the move to segregate water plants for industrial and domestic use will increase the efficiency of the country's water management," he said during the agreement signing ceremony between Air Selangor and IWK at the Intercontinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.

Both parties had also signed a shareholding agreement for the company that will manage the plant, Central Water Reclamation Sdn Bhd, with 60 per cent of the shares owned by Air Selangor and 40 per cent by IWK.

Through the agreement, three plants will be developed for industrial use, namely in Setia Alam, which can produce eight million litres per day (MLD), Section 23, Shah Alam (40 MLD) and Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur (100 MLD).

The joint venture will help the state and Federal government to segregate water supply for the domestic and industrial sectors in the long run.
