KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 —Another case of road surface subsidence has reportedly occurred near the Masjid India area today, causing concern among the public and road users in the area.
The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said the incident occurred at 8.39am along Jalan Bunus, Masjid India, in front of Bombay Jewellery.
Teams from DBKL, Air Selangor, Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), and the Dang Wangi district police headquarters have been deployed to the site to carry out inspections and technical assessments.
“For safety reasons, Jalan Masjid India has been temporarily closed to all vehicles from Lorong Masjid India 4 (beside the mosque) up to the affected section,” it said in a statement.
DBKL stressed that public safety is its top priority and that monitoring and technical evaluations are ongoing to determine the cause of the subsidence, adding that further updates would be issued as needed.
This latest incident adds to a series of reported subsidence incidents around the city centre in recent months, and raises questions about the condition of underground systems and the durability of ageing infrastructure in high-intensity areas like Masjid India.
In August last year, Indian tourist G. Vijaya Lakshmi fell into an eight-metre-deep sinkhole that opened beneath her feet as she walked along Jalan Masjid India one morning. Despite extensive search-and-rescue operations, she was never found.
