Meru rep calls for immediate shutdown of Top Glove factories, curb local spread of Covid-19

KLANG, Dec 3 — Meru state assemblyman Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mokhtar has urged for the complete closure of Top Glove Corp Bhd factories to curb the outbreak of Covid-19.

He said the move should be taken due to the local community's concern over the infections involving its workers as some had failed to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOP).

“The National Security Council (NSC) had ordered the factory closure to be in stages, but personally it should be complete (shutdown), maybe for two weeks, to ensure the outbreak does not spread.

"We do not know who has been infected with Covid-19 and maybe (it is) among the locals themselves who are working in the factory,” he said at the Covid-19 community screening programme held at the Taman Meru 3 Community Hall yesterday.

He said stern action should be taken against some of the factory workers who failed to comply with the SOP of the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) enforced at the hostels, as they had allegedly frequently come in and out of the area thus increasing the risk of transmission.

"The factory management has not managed to fully control their workers as some had even climbed over the hostel fence to get out of the EMCO area," he said.

Mohd Fakhrulrazi had also advised residents to not panic and worry if there is an increase in Covid-19 cases from yesterday’s community screening programme.

"The most important thing is that the residents must always follow the prescribed SOP because we have not won yet," he said.

On Nov 24, Mohd Fakhrulrazi had urged the Federal government to immediately temporarily shut down Top Glove factories.

Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri had the day before said that 28 Top Glove factories in Klang would cease operations in stages to allow factory workers to undergo testing and mandatory quarantine in an effort to contain the spread of the virus among its employees.
