SHAH ALAM, JUL 7: The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) will not consider applications to proclaim the name of ‘Little India’ on Jalan Tengku Kelana, Klang.
MPK Communications and Public Complaints Department Director Norfiza Mahfiz said the decision was in line with the State Government’s stand on the issue.
“This is not a new issue. In fact, it started way back in 2006, so MPK will not take this matter into consideration anymore,” she said to SelangorKini.
She also said it was not just a matter of ‘Little India’ representing the Indian community, the matter also encompass the usage of names related to other races.
Earlier, Association of Little India Entrepreneurs Klang Chairman NP Raman expressed his regret following MPK’s decision to reject his application to rename the area ‘Little India’.
Following that, he requested Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s intervention to resolve the matter.
“I received a letter from the MPK Yang Dipertua Datuk Mohamad Yasid Bidin dated June 9, 2016 which stated that the application filed by my association to proclaim the name of ‘Little India’ was not approved.
“This should not be the case when the Federal Government intends to declare 2017 as ‘Visit Klang Year’. Furthermore, it is about time for MPK to proclaim ‘Little India’ as the official name,” he said as quoted by Bernama.
