Expand Role of Auxiliary Police to Fight Crime

SHAH ALAM, August 24: Selangor leaders have renewed calls to broaden the establishment and role of the auxiliary police at the local authority (LA) level to fight crime.

Subang Jaya Assemblywoman, Hannah Yeoh said, only the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has been granted approval to establish an auxiliary police unit to guard the security of the LA's premises.

"However, their power is only limited to guarding MBPJ property. It is useless because we want approval to guard public safety, not just the MBPJ building or property," he said.

The Selangor State Assembly Speaker said this when responding to the issue on the auxiliary police at LA areas in the state.

Lately, crime rates, including murder and shootings have been growing rampant in the country and the police has failed to resolve most of these cases.

Hannah also asked the Federal Government to not politicise the issue of auxiliary police at local authorities in Selangor because it involves public safety.

She also urged all parties to review the closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) which is also necessary in ensuring the effectiveness of the tool in helping to overcome crime.

"All local authorities should check their CCTVs and help solve crimes," he said.
