KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — The 2021 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (GP) scheduled to be held at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) from October 22-24 has been cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting entry restrictions to Malaysia.
The development was announced by the MotoGP governing bodies - the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), International Road-Racing Teams Association (IRTA) and Dorna Sports in a joint statement today.
“The FIM MotoGP World Championship looks forward to returning to Sepang in 2022 to race in front of our dedicated Malaysian fans,” said the statement.
The statement also confirmed that MotoGP will return to Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli from October 22-24, the weekend previously scheduled for the Malaysian GP, for a second Grand Prix at the classic Italian track.
Meanwhile, SIC in a separate statement said despite the setbacks it remains optimistic and looks forward to featuring this prestigious race again in the 2022 calendar.
SIC also thanked Dorna Sports, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), the Ministry of Health (KKM), the National Security Council (NSC), local authorities, partners and motorsports fans for the continuous support.
The cancellation of the 2021 edition was the second time in a row after the 2020 Malaysian GP scheduled in October last year was also called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
