PETALING JAYA, July 17 — Two policemen were arrested yesterday for allegedly extorting a street light maintenance worker here.
The two, a constable and a lance corporal, were detained at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters at 2.45am, following a police report lodged by a 27-year-old man.
Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said the complainant claimed that he was stopped by policemen in a patrol car while on his way to work with a colleague at 11.30pm on Thursday.
He was said to have flouted the standard operating procedure of the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) by travelling in a car with more than the number of occupants permitted.
“One of the policemen then talked to the man’s employer on the complainant’s cellphone after ordering him to contact his employer.
“Subsequently, the policeman ordered the man to give him RM200,” he said in a statement yesterday, adding that the complainant uploaded a statement on his Twitter expressing his unhappiness at the action of the policemen.
Mohamad Fakhrudin said the two policemen have been remanded for two days from yesterday for investigation under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.
In another development, Mohamad Fakhrudin said police detained 11 men, aged from 17 to 20, at a premises in Damansara for violating the movement control order (MCO) protocol.
Upon receiving a public complaint at 2.07am, police went to the place and found the group drinking liquor and entertaining themselves, he said.
