SHAH ALAM, June 2 — A rubber glove factory allowed to operate during the total lockdown under the movement control order (MCO) was ordered to close after it was detected discharging its waste into the public drain.
Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) director Nor Aziah Jaafar said during an inspection at the premises in Beranang, Hulu Langat, they found that water used for washing and rinsing of related materials mixed with acid was dumped into a nearby drain without treatment.
“The factory is supposed to treat the waste using the effluent treatment system but did not do so and this poses a risk of contamination at the source of water treatment for public use.
"The inspection also found that the premises do not have a water treatment system that must be developed before being allowed to operate," she said here today.
She said they have sealed equipment at the factory and had informed the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) to investigate from the licensing aspect.
"Investigation papers are opened under the Environmental Quality Act 1974 for various offences including not treating factory waste and no treatment system," she said.
Nor Aziah said the Selangor DOE would continue to inspect factories that are allowed to operate during the lockdown to ensure it operates in accordance with the regulations and do not cause pollution.
