SHAH ALAM, April 5 — A total of 10,000 reusable bags (Bagus) has been distributed to the people in Selangor in efforts to encourage the community to reduce the use of plastic bags.
State executive councillor for consumer affairs Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said the move is part of the awareness campaign on the importance of conserving the environment by ditching plastic bags.
“The distribution had started in Kuala Selangor today (yesterday), followed by Klang and other districts.
“We will evaluate the response towards the campaign and if we receive positive feedback, then the number of Bagus will be increased,” he said after the launch of the Bagus programme in Tanjong Karang yesterday.
Mohd Zawawi said the people are urged to bring Bagus with them when out shopping in order for the campaign to reach its objective.
“Plastics bags pose as the main environmental pollution, especially in drainages and rivers, which causes clogged drains as well as flash floods.
“It is also harmful towards the oceans and marine life where it is mistaken for food by sea animals and this would also affect our food source. Therefore, we need to make sure that the objective of the campaign is reached to save our environment and earth,” he added.
