ECRL alignment will risk Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge listing as heritage site

SHAH ALAM, July 6 — The Selangor government’s effort in pursuing the Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge (PKGS) as a world heritage site would be held back if the original alignment of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is retained.

Selangor Local Government, Public Transportation and New Village Development Committee chairman Ng Sze Han said the attempt to get the PKGS on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) heritage list seemed positive when the former Pakatan Harapan (PH) government had revised the route to Klawang, Jelebu, and Nilai.

“The original plan (from Bentong to Gombak) of the ECRL would cut through the Gombak Selangor Quartz Ridge, which was revised by the previous PH administration.

“However, this may not be the case as we have been informed that the original alignment may be retained,” he said when contacted by SelangorKini today.

Ng had also urged for the Federal government to conduct a detailed study especially on conservation of natural resources as well as minimising the impact on individual property.

Recently, it was reported that a proposal has been made to revert the ECRL alignment to the original route that was proposed by the previous Barisan Nasional government.

The Selangor administration had previously objected to the ECRL as the old route would pass through the 14km-long PKGS, previously known as the Klang Gates Quartz Ridge.

PKGS is believed to be the longest pure quartz dyke in the world.
