SHAH ALAM, March 25 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) expects the inter-monsoon phase to begin on Sunday (March 29) and continue until May.

Its director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the phase marks the end of the northeast monsoon, which began on November 13 last year.

“During the monsoon transition phase, the region will experience light winds from various directions. These conditions can encourage the formation of thunderstorms, which typically bring heavy rain and strong winds over a short period.

“This is likely to occur particularly in the late afternoon and early evening across most areas in the western and inland parts of Peninsular Malaysia, as well as western Sabah and Sarawak,” he said in a statement today.

Hisham added that the weather phenomenon has the potential to cause flash floods, fallen trees, and damage to weak structures.

As such, he advised the public to exercise greater caution during this period and to stay alert to weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia.

Members of the public may also contact the MetMalaysia hotline at 1-300-22-1638 for further enquiries.
