KOTA BHARU, March 20 — A total of 2,384 offences were detected using drones during the three-day Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA) 2026, which began on March 16.
Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement senior director Datuk Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the four main offences recorded were 715 cases of overtaking on double lines, 627 cases of running red lights, 539 cases of overtaking on the left, and 503 cases of using emergency lanes.
“Every offence recorded will be used as evidence, and JPJ will issue a notice for the vehicle owner involved to attend an interview,” he told reporters at the JPJ East Coast Academy here last night.
He said up to 200 traffic offences could be detected using drone technology in just 45 minutes, demonstrating its effectiveness in enforcement operations.
So far, JPJ has six drone units at its headquarters and plans are underway to expand their use in future operations.
“The use of these drones is not intended to catch road users out, but rather as a proactive measure to record and identify offences that contribute to accidents.
“This approach focuses on safety by ensuring road users are more disciplined and comply with the law,” he said.
He added that a review of the JPJ database identified 288 hotspots nationwide based on high accident rates and traffic offences.
“The three states with the highest numbers are Kelantan with 53 locations, Sarawak with 50, and Perak with 34.
“In Kelantan, the most significant offences detected involved queue cutting and running red lights, all of which fall under provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
He said those issued notices could pay a compound within 15 days to receive a 50 per cent discount, reducing the fine to RM150.
“JPJ emphasised that high-capacity drones, equipped with zoom capabilities of up to 200 times, allow vehicle registration numbers to be clearly identified even from a distance,” he said.
