Recycling dump in Port Klang ordered to clear out

KLANG, March 11 — The Royal Klang City Council (MBDK) has issued a seven-day eviction notice to an unauthorised recycling site in Taman Selat Selatan, Port Klang after the collection of used items in the area continued despite repeated clean-up efforts.

MBDK councillor Arulnesan Jayabalan said the council, together with KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM), had cleaned up the area several times, but the activity of collecting recyclable items continued.

“This is not the first clean-up operation and the unauthorised structures used as storage for recyclable items have been ordered to be vacated as they pose potential health risks to residents,” he said when met at the operation site yesterday.

Arulnesan said the council had also taken a considerate approach by meeting the operator of the recycling premises, who claimed to be a single mother and a recipient of zakat assistance for house rent.

“The operator was asked to clear the area, but the amount of rubbish was too large, forcing the council to deploy its own assets with the cooperation of KDEBWM to assist in the clean-up,” he said.

He added that he would also help channel appropriate assistance to the single mother through relevant agencies, in his capacity representing the Klang Member of Parliament’s office.
