SHAH ALAM, Feb 19 — The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) will continue its MBSA ‘MySave Food’ @ Bazar Ramadan 2026 programme in conjunction with the fasting month, aimed at reducing food wastage and channelling surplus food to those in need.

The initiative will be carried out every Monday to Friday from February 23 until March 13.

This year, five Ramadan bazaars have been selected for the programme, namely Section 13, Section 17, Section 19, Section 28 and Section U16.

“The MBSA ‘MySave Food’ @ Bazar Ramadan 2026 programme serves as a platform for MBSA to address the issue of food wastage, while supporting environmental sustainability efforts by reducing the amount of food waste sent to landfills.

“The programme also promotes responsible practices in food storage, distribution and consumption.

“Through this initiative, traders at the Ramadan bazaars will hand over surplus food that remains in good and safe condition for consumption, but was unsold on the day, to the programme’s secretariat and volunteers at the respective locations,” it said in a statement.

All collected food will be recorded, weighed and labelled before being distributed to identified locations, including surau, mosques, low-cost flats and student hostels at public and private higher education institutions, to be served as meals after tarawih prayers.

A total of 616 volunteers from various agencies are expected to participate in the programme, including Briged Sukarelawan UiTM, the Higher Education Department, Management and Science University (MSU), Gema Selangor and IKRAMMUDA Shah Alam.

MBSA is also collaborating with Darul Ehsan Facilities Management Sdn Bhd (DEFM) and Denai Alam Residents Association (DARA) for the programme.

The council said the initiative has been implemented continuously since 2021 following encouraging response from Ramadan bazaar traders.

During Ramadan last year, MBSA successfully collected 7,717kg of surplus food.

The effort has also been recognised by Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, who described the initiative as a best-practice model for all local authorities in the state to emulate.

MBSA said the programme reflects its continued commitment to assisting the underprivileged, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly No Poverty (SDG 1), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).
