SHAH ALAM, Jan 30 — The Sabak Bernam District Council (MDSB) is strengthening efforts to curb illegal waste dumping by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and stricter monitoring, to ensure firm action is taken against those who violate regulations.

As part of these efforts, its Corporate and Public Relations Unit said it has provided 335 leach bin centres (large bins) across 117 traditional village areas throughout Sabak Bernam to facilitate residents in disposing of waste legally and in an orderly manner.

“However, dumping outside the leach bins still occurs, causing some areas to turn into illegal dumping sites. Although the quantity of waste disposed of is not large, regular site clean-up is still required,” it told Media Selangor.

The local authority also acknowledged that the main challenge is a shortage of manpower for monitoring and enforcing regulations at dumping sites.

“In addition, rising maintenance costs for new areas also pose a major challenge to MDSB in its efforts to address illegal dumping,” said the unit.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari directed all district offices to focus on several local issues, including expediting and finalising matters related to illegal dumping in the state.

He said that apart from illegal dumping, issues like land encroachment, land ownership, and strata titles also require serious attention from all relevant parties.

Amirudin added that he would personally conduct site visits to every location, particularly hotspot areas, to ensure illegal dumping sites are completely eradicated.
