PETALING JAYA, Jan 28 — Selangor recorded eight million tourists throughout 2025, indicating that its tourism sector is on a positive trajectory and has the potential to continue growing.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the consistent organisation of sporting events like the Selangor International Junior Golf Championship (SIJGC) and the PKNS Selangor Masters has made a significant contribution towards supporting the growth of the state’s tourism sector.

“Experience over the past year shows that some tourists who visit Selangor have the potential to return, including those directly involved in the hospitality and sports tourism sectors.

“These international-standard sporting events are aligned with Visit Selangor Year (VSY) and Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) in boosting the arrival of both domestic and international tourists,” he said during a media conference on the SIJGC and PKNS Selangor Masters 2026 at the Seri Selangor Golf Club today.

Amirudin added that sporting events in Selangor also attract foreign players and tourists from Korea, Japan, Europe, and neighbouring countries, thereby strengthening the state’s position as a sports tourism destination.

“The events organised are not merely sporting activities, but also encompass elements of sports tourism that involve the hospitality sector and various other supporting industries.

“The presence of these foreign tourists proves Selangor’s appeal as a sports tourism destination. The organisation of tournaments like these will continue to increase tourists’ interest in visiting Selangor,” he said.

The state government targeted eight million tourist arrivals to Selangor, with transaction values of RM11.7 billion, in conjunction with VSY 2025.

For this year, Selangor is targeting nine million tourist arrivals under VSY 2026, in line with the national target of 47 million tourist arrivals for VMY 2026, supported by the positive performance of the state’s tourism sector.
