Najib files appeal against 1MDB conviction

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 — Ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has filed a notice at the Court of Appeal against the High Court’s decision to sentence him to 15 years in prison and a RM11.4 billion fine in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case.

His counsel Muhammad Farhan Muhammad Shafee said the notice was filed on the evening of December 29, which was later confirmed by deputy public prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib.

The appeal challenges the verdict delivered on December 26 by judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who found Najib guilty on four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion of the sovereign wealth fund.

For the abuse of power charges, the court imposed a sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment on each count and a collective fine of RM11.4 billion, in default 40 years in jail.

On the 21 money laundering charges, he received a sentence of five years in prison on each count, with no additional fine.

The 72-year-old will serve an effective custodial term of 15 years, as the court ordered all prison sentences to run concurrently.

This sentence is to start only after Najib completes his existing six-year term for the misappropriation of RM42 million in the SRC International case, which concludes on August 23, 2028.
