SHAH ALAM, Dec 25 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) has issued 124 compounds amounting to RM4.87 million for various offences as of Tuesday (December 23).

Its River Basin and Coastal Management Division head assistant director Haslina Amer said the compounds issued under the Luas Enactment 1999 were not limited to factories, but also involved earthworks and development activities.

“We received 96 public complaints relating to various cases, all of which were accepted to enable investigations to be carried out so that preventive action could be taken.

“For enforcement action, 124 compounds, including nine related to pollution, were issued, amounting to RM4.87 million, while 30 investigation papers are still under further action,” she said during a media engagement session yesterday.

Meanwhile, no red code incidents or shutdowns of water treatment plants have been reported so far, following round-the-clock enforcement action.

“Pollution occurs at all times, regardless of hot or rainy weather. Among the causes are accidents that lead to sewage spills, land clearing for agricultural activities, and effluent discharges.

“There is also no difference in ‘hotspot’ areas, as incidents usually occur at the same locations, and to date, the Sungai Langat basin has often been a focus due to rapid development in the area,” Haslina said.

As such, her department remains on constant 24-hour standby, implementing monitoring and control measures to ensure preventive and enforcement action can be taken promptly.
