KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 — After 25 years since its establishment, the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) will have its own headquarters by Sungai Klang, with the concept of a “river guardian”.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said the four-storey building on a 0.9ha site in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam, will boost Luas’ capabilities as the state water resources manager.

He said the RM65 million project, which features an environmentally friendly design, will kick off early next year and be completed in three years.

“We have identified the site as among the best. It has its own implications, which is that we want to show that river-based projects can be done.

“Sungai Klang is the site of rejuvenation, conservation and similar projects. For all these projects, we want to provide a perception that this river can be a theme of development, not just a garbage dump,” Izham told reporters.

Previously, he witnessed the signing of the Sales and Purchase Agreement for Luas’ headquarters between the agency, Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) and Berjaya Land Sdn Bhd at Berjaya Times Square here today.

Izham explained that the “river guardian” concept was chosen to reflect Luas’ role as the regulator of water resources to ensure environmental sustainability in Selangor.

He said it is hoped that the location of the new Luas headquarters by Sungai Klang would effectively support the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) project.

“Luas protects our water sources and has placed its headquarters in the area itself, sending a serious message on riverside developments,” Izham added.

In 2018, the state government launched the SMG as an initiative to clean, conserve and develop the heavily polluted Sungai Klang.

LLSB, a wholly owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, was appointed by the state government to plan and manage implementation of the SMG.
