SHAH ALAM, Dec 15 — The state government has ordered local councils to submit data on illegal dumping hotspots in a week, following Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj’s recent reprimand over public cleanliness in the state.
State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said this was decided in a special meeting with representatives of local councils KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM), Public Works Department (JKR), Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), and related units.
After chairing the meeting, Ng said immediate moves include upping monitoring frequencies in these hotspots and coordinating work schedules to ensure public complaints can be addressed more effectively.
“Now, our focus is on gathering data on these hotspots first to study so follow-up action can be done systematically and comprehensively,” he told Media Selangor.
He added that each hotspot will be sorted by district to identify actual needs, including additional labour, support staff in the field, and waste collection frequency.
“The data will be studied in early January before any short-term move or budget allocation is decided,” he said.
Ng added that monitoring by local councils have been intensified with a more organised schedule to ensure issues can be immediately addressed.
Previously, Bernama reported that Sultan Sharafuddin said many complaints have been made over Selangor’s poor cleanliness, with His Royal Highness emphasising that immediate action must be taken to clean up the state.
The Ruler said there has been a clear rise in complaint forms submitted with complainants’ names and contact information, which shows that the people truly want follow-up action, reflecting a growing level of public concern over urban cleanliness.
Sultan Sharafuddin said Selangor should be a model of progress, efficiency and good governance, “but (the) people complain that walking in most urban and suburban (areas) is not as it’s made out to be”.
