Tropical depression: Northern peninsula braces for severe storms

SHAH ALAM, Nov 26 – The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning on a tropical depression located about 202km southwest of Georgetown, Penang.

“This is expected to cause continuous heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia,” it posted on X today.

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused flooding in several states, forcing tens of thousands of residents to be evacuated.

The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) reported that as at 6am, the number of flood victims in the country has continued to increase, with 24,907 people from 8,308 families displaced.

The victims are sheltering at 142 temporary relief centres (PPS) in 26 districts nationwide.

Yesterday, MetMalaysia issued a thunderstorm and heavy rain warning for several peninsular states in the north and east.

The department said the inclement weather is expected to persist today.
